Wild boars inspire worship of God Is this email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser. Wild Boars Inspire Worship in the Amazon “We Christian [U] want to make our music to worship God. We want to make our song about the Huangana.” The Huangana, or wild boar, is one of the favorite dishes of the U people. Over millennia, this animal has been observed by the U people. It has two group behaviors that are particularly peculiar. One is, when they are walking through the jungle they will go in single file lines with the largest in the front and the smallest in the back. The other is, when threatened, the Huangana will surround the smallest one, keeping their backsides to it, while fending off attackers. These characteristics were admirable to the U and the group we were with wanted to write a song with an accompanying dance to show the wonder of God’s creation. This cautious people have held tightly to their culture, protecting it from outsiders for more than 500 years in a remote part of the Amazon rainforest. At first they told us that they did not know their traditional music and dance enough to compose something for God. Then, towards the end of our team’s time there, they surprised us with a performance. To our knowledge, it was the first composed song and dance, in their cultural style made for their Creator and his Son, Jesus! Our team’s trip was an amazing success. I was blessed to work with an extremely talented group of international believers, all operating perfectly out of their giftings. We wanted this 10 days with the U to not just be a “workshop” or “recording” we wanted to leave with them with something that would last: the life-changing truth that Jesus made their beautiful culture and longs to hear them praise Him in their language, with their instruments, dance, and artistic gifts. We grew close to them as they took the guys deep into the rainforest to hunt for monkeys (which we ate . . . twice) and taught their traditional weaving and body paint to the women of our team. Though a finished product was not our end-goal, we were able to see the performance already mentioned, a beautiful lullaby, story necklaces, several testimonies, and many Biblical truths from their traditional storytelling. Besides getting malaria and having to be taken out a day early, it was such a great trip and I believe we left a people confident to share about their Creator in the ways that their people can best understand and connect with on a heart level. Stay tuned for a professionally produced documentary about the trip this summer. Coming back from the Amazon was a crazy time. I spent around 3 weeks recovering from malaria and the bronchitis that went with it. We had several wonderful visitors during that time, including Kristina’s parents who were able to help with the kids while I was gone for nearly two weeks. I came home already late with my university semester and behind in lots of ministry correspondence. It’s been a whirlwind since then, but we got the two older kids in school now and are getting ahold of life again. Looking forward. We have a family reunion trip planned to South New Jersey in June. We are blessed to share with at least two churches, one will be coming down to minister with us in July on a short-term trip. Right when we get back from NJ, John has been invited by Wycliff and Assemblies of God Costa Rica to teach on Ethnoarts to their top indigenous leaders throughout the country. Many of them are actually Ngäbe, from the other side of the border. This is an amazing opportunity of influence that will hopefully change worldviews for Indigenous churches in Costa Rica. Praise God! We have been blessed to have Pastors Steve and Malana Ganz live right down the road from us, while they are learning Spanish. They feel led by the Lord to work here in Panama among the Indigenous peoples. We met them several years ago and have worked with them several times since then. They have been such a personal blessing to our lives and hearts over the last few months. Please Pray for: Divine opportunities to connect with leaders at the Ngäbe national congress next week. Out of all the opportunities that come our way, we would choose the best of them. For a community of like-minded believers in our part of Panama.
